A Poem for English Class
You’d think that writing a poem would be an easy task
Yet at this moment in time I find myself having to ask
How writers, like Hornby, can think so many complex thoughts
And fit them into a stanza, which really isn’t a lot
This poem, in particular, was written not of thought, but force
For an assignment that was given by our English teacher, of course
He said that all of our poems needed to contain
Four elements of poetry; a requirement some found insane
Let’s look at ones already added, most without hesitation:
Rhyme, rhythm, and rhyme scheme – Hey, look! Alliteration!
Well, we’ve got that covered. Now, the important part.
This should be an “overflow of emotion; one written from the heart”
Wait, was that my twelfth line? Hey, look! I’m done!
I’ll add one more element that will surely ruin this fun:
Free verse
